Chaired by Katina, our 16 June meeting was the last for this Toastmasters year. The theme for the meeting is “The Power of Habits”. Middle of winter blues with a few absences too.
On 1 July, Spinnaker moves to a new area with the reunification of the two Districts 72 and 112.
At this meeting, Rach our Grammarian had a word for us: routine. She noted Ash used an impressive 21 filler words and gets the wooden spoon award. She also complimented our guest Tanya for using the word of the day in her first table topic.
Table Topics ran with the theme of World Cup Fever where each speaker had to choose a random country in the top 10 rankings and talk about their chosen country. Evaluator Ash thought it was a great theme considering New Zealand played their first game today.
Speech 1 by Kamilla was an icebreaker entitled “Permission to Quit”. Kamilla opened with a question “have you ever watched a survival documentary?” She believes quitting is one of the most underrated skills you can develop. “I have had way more fresh starts than I can count! Staying too long doesn’t make you loyal! If it’s not quite right, give yourself permission to quit!” Evaluator Jacqui opened her evaluation by saying “what an amazing speech! I loved it!” Jacqui complimented Kamilla on her first official speech and suggested next time she use more body language and try not to read so much from her notes and to use more anecdotes to help illustrate her points..
Speech 2 by Ron, introduced by Dieter was “Your style of humour”, a level 2 speech. Ron opened with a question “When was the last time you laughed?” He defined humour and said it was a way of bridging the gap between the speaker and the audience. He used two scenarios to demonstrate funny situations while travelling where it was thought he was a villain but he wasn’t at all. Evaluator Dieter said “what an enjoyable speech from Ron today!” He reminded Ron to ensure his setups were ready to go at the beginning, and the fact that he went over time would have got him disqualified in a contest.
Speech 3 was introduced by Chetna, with Katina delivering an educational on “goal setting”.
As is tradition at a Spinnaker Toastmasters meeting, the Crunchies flew from the Memory Master’s hands again as each person chimed in with the correct guess or answer to Angela’s questions.
Timekeeper Roman’s first attempt at timekeeping went according to plan.
Jinny’s general evaluation from an online perspective was thorough and effective.
