Final Meeting of 2024

President Ron chaired the final meeting of the 2024 year for Spinnaker Toastmasters, and what a ripper of a meeting it was.

We had three guests from Waikanae Toastmasters Club in attendance to hand over the Travelling Gavel (see separate post).

Four speeches were presented:

Terence from the Waikanae club described a bad day travelling from South Africa to Wellington and the delays and dramas that occurred. Evaluator Dieter said he was having flashbacks of a past life in South Africa too. He commended the audience engagement and recommended Terence use his voice more to bring colour to his speaking.

Dale described three occasions that tested her emotional intelligence: success teaching kids to swim, her big birthday, and recreating a photo from 50 years ago. Evaluator Katina thought it was a superb speech and recommended using a more story format next time.

Lin talked about a solo motorcycle trip in the North Island – it ended up being a thrilling if not heart-stopping adventure. Evaluator Kathy said it was a delightful speech by Lin who made good use of pauses to create tension.

Ron practised a workplace presentation he is giving shortly on his new job of gathering intelligence on emerging biosecurity risks to New Zealand. Evaluator David thought it was interesting, engaging and informative and offered some tips on designing the Powerpoint slides for better viewing.

As this was our last meeting of the year, Spinnaker will now be closed until the first week of February 2025. If you are interested in visiting Spinnaker, and maybe activating your New Year’s Resolution to learn public speaking, contact us by email or phone 021 45 34 24 to find out more.
