Spinnaker’s 3 September meeting was chaired by Megan with the theme “Spring into action” and she displayed some lovely daffodils from Dannevirke.
Grammarian Jocelyn’s word of the day is “blossoming” making you think the dreariness of winter will be going away soon.
Katina was table topics mistress who chose the meeting theme of spring into action.
Dieter – sound of crashing glass – told the story of when he was a child a pressure cooker exploded and spread the kitchen with beans, so he sprang into action and vanished trying to appear blameless.
Dirk – walking into an old dilapidated house with springy floors – and he realised he was home and his house needs plenty of work.
Jocelyn – what was today’s good news – went to dentist and received good news about their condition.
Megan – why did the water spring forth in the middle of the road – because there’s something dark and mysterious down in the depths of those water pipes, one of those “fatbergs” that caused the problem, so don’t trust the media what they tell you about it.
Kathy – what puts a smile on your face when you realise spring has sprung – that you realise day by day that the days are getting longer and you can close the curtains later, and the longer days give you a bounce to your step.
Lin – what do you make of Taylor Swift’s concerts – usually not really into famous people and their success but she’s a good example for teenagers who adore her, copy her, go to her concerts and support her with anything “taytay” related.
Kathy evaluated table topics which followed the theme of “spring” where the speaker was given the start of the story and the speaker had to complete the story with their speech. She gave the best table topics award to Dieter.
Speech 1 by Vicky, introduced by Katina who said “icebreaker” speeches always have great anticipation. Vicki opened by talking about a trip to the UK and Paris in 1999 and went shopping and to a bar but got lost getting back to her hotel. Evaluator Katina said she admired the structure with the flashback to 1999 and you could feel the drama and tension which showed great problem solving skills leading to a conclusion with a sigh of relief. She said it was a perfect story with a connection to the audience with interesting language.

Speech 2 by Darrell, introduced by Dieter, “Price Promise – we’ll match any competitor’s price”. Dieter said that Darrell spoke with conviction on something that was clearly on his mind, with a good call to action at the end.
Speech 3 by Dale, introduced by Lin, “Contests and Tips”, important information for the upcoming table topics and humorous contests. Evaluator Lin thought the speech caught her attention with clear information using a powerpoint slideshow emphasising the rules and advice on how to prepare for the contests.
Best speaker was Dale and best evaluator was Dieter.
