Spinnaker’s 6th August meeting was hosted by Megan with the theme of “Olympians”.
We welcomed an international guest Kim beaming in all the way from London in the UK. We also had a past Toastmaster Vicki rejoin us tonight.
The Grammarian word of the day from Ron was “ultimate”, used as an adjective.
Table Topics run by Jacqui was “all about your favourite Olympic sport”.

Mike evaluated table topics, and gave all speakers some feedback. Best table topics was Jocelyn for using “in conclusion”.
Speech 1 by Angela, introduced by Dale, was an Icebreaker for a new path, entitled “Lost – Episode 2”, a continuation of a previous speech by Megan on the same topic. Dale said “Well, what an opening! Angela asked us to close our eyes tight, and then she painted a picture. This was 1997, central London, 10 pm at night, swirling misty rain everywhere, alone, terrified, and lost.” A perfect introduction to the ultimate humorous speech with a twist!

Speech 2 by Dirk, introduced by Katina was to focus on body language. Dirk talked about how having kids sucks up all your free time and highlights your bad habits, and how he strives for personal snippets of free time. Katina thought Dirk’s speechmaking had gone up a notch with the use of his hands and body to accentuate his story.
Speech 3 by Kathy, introduced by Darrell, was using vocal variety, a perfect theme for an online speaker called “The Little Things”. Kathy listed the questions people ask her all the time and her responses. It was very humorous and full of gestures and vocal variety.
Darrell thought that Kathy’s use of “ooohhhhh” spoken with such feeling and emphasis, and her carefully constructed thoughts added much value to her online presence.

General Evaluator Dieter thought the Olympics theme was very well done and he enjoyed all the facts and figures Megan peppered the meeting with. Dieter commended all the evaluators on giving each speaker a challenge or improvement point to take away. He awarded the speech of the day to Angela because it touched him personally. Best evaluator award went to Katina.
