Spinnaker’s 15 August meeting was chaired by Darrell with the theme of Nuptials, and Darrell peppered the meeting with little known facts about getting married to keep us entertained.
Dirk’s word of the day was “phenomenal” and in his report he mentioned those who had managed to use the word in their speeches.
Table Topics run by Dirk had a number of topics for speakers to answer: Ron had to describe an invention and how it would benefit us, Susie had any job for a week, Jacqui had to share a memorable childhood experience, and Janine wanted to travel to any place in the world – Iceland was her favourite.
Speaker 1 was Megan with the title “Harry Potter and Mother Teresa”, where she described mentoring and how Toastmasters mentors can be beneficial to help you refocus and remind you why you are doing this Toastmasters journey. Megan finished by saying that if it’s good enough for Harry Potter and Mother Teresa, then its good enough for her to have a mentor. Evaluator Paul thought the structure in Megan’s speech was ideal.
Speaker 2 was Katina with Reflections on a Path, where she linked her Pathways journey with the development stages of a child, from starting with an icebreaker (toddler), moving through the teenage years, to now being a fully-grown up adult, and how her speaking has changed over the last two years. Evaluator Dale said that Katina had given a phenomenal speech and noted how she had witnessed the growing up of the speaker over the last two years.
Speaker 3 by Mike was “Pray silence for the best man” where Mike did a practice run for a future wedding he will be attending. He used great gestures and eye contact, recounting of the happy couple’s lives together, gave some successful marriage tips, and toasted the happy couple. Evaluator Darrell said that Mike had put together a lovely best man speech which honoured the bride and groom.
Speaker 4 was Dieter who was “Helping people escape the debt trap”, where he explained the differences between poverty and wealth in South Africa and New Zealand, and how he gets to meet people, find out their issues and work out ways to help them, giving them financial literacy skills, setting goals, breaking habits and teaching their children good habits for a lifetime. Evaluator Sarah said she loved the speech and complimented Dieter’s ability to tell a story.
Memory Master Angela handed out chocolates to those who answered her memory questions correctly.
General evaluator Kathy thought that Darrell had done a good job chairing the meeting, using the Nuptials theme to link with one of the speakers.
