Pot luck meeting

Spinnaker held a pot luck meeting on Tuesday 1 August where all attendees had to draw their role from a hat as they arrived. This meant they had no preparation beforehand.

Chaired by Dale, the theme of “pot luck” meant Toastmasters were required to think and work quickly with their chosen role, and use all their speaking skills to adapt to the new situation. This can happen quite often at meetings in the workplace, where you suddenly find things have changed and you may be thrust into the limelight or your planned presentation has changed focus.

Angela ran table topics, with speakers drawing out a country from the FIFA world cup teams and having to talk about that country, team or any aspect that came to mind.

Darrell gave us a humorous speech which was “politically and religiously” biased in the funniest way possible, giving everybody a good laugh, and holding the twist until the last moment.

Grammarian Sarah used “kia kaha” – or “be strong” as her theme and some speakers managed to use it in their speeches or comments.

Our two guests also participated in table topics, telling them about their exciting lives and what brought to them to our club. We hope to see them again in the future.

Even though it was truly a “dark and stormy night”, everyone who attended, either in person or online, had a thoroughly good time enjoying each other’s company and stories.
