Spinnaker Toastmasters meeting chaired by Darrell on Tuesday 18 July had the theme “When I was a boy”. The word of the day was “resilience” so they were blended by Dale into the table topics theme of “when I was young and resilient”.
Table Topics speakers were Darrell who talked about being resilient as a boy, Gary who gave three examples of resilience in sticking to a plan when he wanted to get something, Megan who grew up on a farm where saying no wasn’t an option, our guest Gerusio who explained how being resilient when he was growing up in Mozambique led him to learn English and come to New Zealand, and Angela who described a horrific accident she survived even after receiving the last rites.
Speaker 1 was Kathy who described three mentors in her life – a subconscious mentor, an inspirational mentor, and an intentional mentor. Evaluator Gary loved the structure and planning of the speech.
Speech 2 was by Lin, an icebreaker telling us how she escaped the cold of northern China where she grew up, to the high humidity of her university days, and then to the moderate climate of New Zealand where she has taken up swimming, and loves adventurous activities. Evaluator Darrell said Lin had laid the groundwork for future speeches which is the mark of a great icebreaker.
Speaker 3 was Dieter who told us true stories of life as a financial advisor – the good, the bad, and the funny. Evaluator Megan thought Dieter delivered the speech in a great story format without notes with a good mix of serious and funny stories.
General Evaluator Gary complimented Darrell for a well organised and run meeting, welcoming our guest Gerusio. He also complimented the evaluators who started with “This speaker delivered …” so they knew they had achieved their goals right up front.
Another most enjoyable meeting at Spinnaker Toastmasters.
