Is your glass half full?

A most enjoyable meeting was held at Spinnaker Toastmasters on Tuesday 4 July 2023 with Kathy as the online Chair, and the theme “independence”. Ten members were present and one online.

Table topics run by Jacqui challenged speakers to take the role of a lawyer and defend some weird laws in America, such as (1) no tire screeching in Darby Kansas, (2) its a misdemeanor to swear from a moving vehicle in Rockville, (3) its against the law to inhale bus fumes with intent on euphoria, and (4) you must close the gate behind you over a kitch, stream, river or road. Evaluator Darrell thought it was a crazy table topics session which appealed to our emotions.

Speaker 1 was Dale with “Just Do It”, an inspirational speech about taking on the challenge of giving a speech at a club in another country, specifically at Caloundra Toastmasters, in Queensland. She mentioned the challenges of getting on the speaking programme, the venue and environment, dealing with technology, and the evaluation.

Speech 2 was from Katina called “The glass half full”, in which she discussed whether we are all pessimists or optimists. Katina admitted she herself is an optimist. Katina’s 20 minute speech was engaging and her gestures improved as she went on, according to evaluator Paul.

Speech 3 from Gary called “How was your mirror?” invited us to go home and look in the mirror and ask ourselves if we are where we planned to be in our lives. He said to get advice, make a plan and be happy! Evaluator Jacqui felt that we were busy reflecting on our own lives while Gary was speaking, and said we really needed to hear this message tonight.

In General Business, new member Lin was voted in to the club and Immediate Past President Katina welcomed her.
